No matter how far the technology advances, your resume is still the best tool you have in your arsenal. Your resume can get you through the modern Applicant Tracking Systems and get you in front of a potential employer AKA decision maker. So, it’s high time you put more emphasis on your resume and make it updated and optimized for Applicant Tracking Systems.

So, Let’s go and learn How to write your Resume in 2020.

Resume Writing Tips 2020

Tips # 1

One Resume For All Approach

If you have one resume and sending it to all the potential employers, then stop doing it immediately. It’s never going to work because nobody likes this approach.

Employers expect applicants to go through their job postings first, then if the criterion fits the applicant’s profile, only then they should send them their resume.

Unfortunately most of the job seekers don’t pay attention to the details, they don’t even bother about what the recruiter wants to hear from them. As a result, job seekers don’t hear from recruiter ever, they simply gets sorted and scrapped.

Recruiters use Applicant Tracking System these days for primary sorting, these ATS do the initial short listings, so, if your resume is not optimized for ATS then your chance of getting shortlisted is pretty slim.

After the first short listings, it goes to the human recruiters for another round of short listings where a decision taker decides whether you’re going to be called for an interview or not!

Your Resume Design matters at this stage; well organized, structured and presentable resume gets the upper hand, undoubtedly.

A recruiter gives only a glance and usually on average they spend only  7.4 seconds to make a decision.

Those 7.4 seconds decides whether you’re going to get a call or not!

In short, customize your resume for every job postings you’re applying for. One resume and one resume design is not going to help you a lot unless you’re highly on demand.

Tips # 2

Keep It Short | Don’t pad your Resume with irrelevant words

The second most important thing in your resume is the length. You don’t want to leave any important information at the same time, you don’t want to over do it.

So, what should be the appropriate length of your resume?

Well, it’s hard to determine one formula for all as it depends on the candidates experience and portfolio. Some will have more information on their resume, some will have difficulties to fill it up.

So, it’s safer to say, the length of the resume will depend on the applicants dossier. The senior post applicants will have more content on their resume than the freshers.

A recent study shows, candidates with 2 page resume got hired 70% of the time for the mid level or senior positions compared to the candidates with  1 page resume.

For freshers, getting a job is harder as their resume is not filled up with expertise and experiences. Well, it’s supposed to be hard but don’t worry, there’s still hope… we have done a piece on How to get a job fast as a fresher! You can find the piece here.

Ideally freshers should stick to one page ATS friendly resume, that makes sense. If I was a fresher, then I would have invest more time on my cover letter than my resume. I hope this makes sense.

Don’t go beyond 15 years, because beyond that, you might be doing the jobs that aren’t that meaningful for the post you’re applying today.

Tips # 3

Put the right keywords | ATS tools use Keywords for screening

The right keywords are the most important thing in any resume. If you don’t put the right keywords in your resume, the chances of getting seen in the eyes of the ATS is very thin.

ATS tools use the keywords for screening the applications, so, without the right keywords, your resume is not going to be shortlisted. So, nailing the right keywords is very crucial.

Optimize your resume with the right keywords for every job application you send. This increases your chance to be seen drastically.

Tips # 4

Answer the right questions | Pay attention to what the employer is asking for!

While applying for a job, you should ask yourself,

“Why should someone hire me?”

What would you like to hear if you were the hiring manager!

Once you’re confident enough, start answering the questions on you resume.

You should always put the important information on the top of your resume, remember, the top third of your resume is the prime real estate, use it wisely.

Tips # 5

Highlight Your Skills

Employers and hiring managers are looking for skills and expertise, they’re not looking for your dashing personality. They also don’t care about your looks unless you’re applying as a model.

So, what they care about?

They care about your skills, training, achievements, accomplishments and experiences you have.

They need you to do a task for them and they only care about that. They wanted to learn if you’re the right person to take the challenge or not!

If you can answer that question properly in your resume, there is a fair chance that they will call you for a face to face interview.

Tips # 6

Provide Proof | Show them what you’ve done with proof!

That’s the final keel in the coffin, employers care about the results you can provide.

Show them how good you are!

Show them what you’re made of!

They want to see how much have you done! Just show them that!

If you have accomplished something in your previous position that you’re proud of and makes sense, then you should definitely let them know that. If you have done it individually or in a team, tell them boldly.

Employers care about the numbers and they like them with proofs. Just deliver it and it’ll be hard to ignore you.

Then, it’s all about the salary negotiations.

Tips # 7

The Follow Ups | Don’t just send your resume, follow it up!

That’s the final tip we have for you today.

Employers or recruiting agencies receive thousands of application via various channels. It’s hard to go through every application they receive, so , to automate the process they use tools like ATS.

ATS optimized resume can be seen better but it’s not the end of the world. At the end of the day, it’s a human that makes the call, so , follow it up gently.

Send them an email if you can find it.

Give them a gentle call to see if they can follow up.

Find someone in the organization who can follow through.

This is not going to hurt anyone nor going to cause any trouble. At times being seen is the most important factor.

I hope you’ve got the point. Follow these simple but important tips and incorporate these in your Resume/CV. You’ll definitely get better results. Until next time…See Ya!

We’re going to breakdown the Applicant Tracking System in few easy steps so that you can start optimizing your resume/CV for the best result.

What is Applicant Tracking System?

Applicant Tracking System is a piece of software that hiring managers and recruiting agencies use these days to shortlist the candidates by the best match for the desired position. The software goes through every application and sorts them by considering a number of factors that recruiting officials feeds it with.

How ATS works?

As we have learned earlier, ATS is a piece of software with artificial intelligence that can read and sort the applications and by tracking the designated words used in the Resume of the applicants. If your resume doesn’t have the right words, despite having all the required expertise, it’ll not shortlist the resume. This in short means, your resume is not going to get in front of a decision maker.

How ATS sees your resume?

ATS can only read the texts that you have in the resume, it can’t see the graphics you’ve used and it can’t see the picture that you’ve included or attached on your resume. It can only read the letters that you have on your resume. In short, the graphics or the design that makes your resume compelling to human eyes; don’t have any effect in the eyes of ATS.

Most ATS tools can’t read PDF very well …you should try to send DOC or DOCX format for online applications.

How should your resume look like in 2020! In the modern era of ATS tools?

You must be wondering how your resume should look like in 2020? How can you bypass the ATS tools and land in front of a decision maker, right?

Well, you’re in luck; you can read our Resume Writing Tips in 2020!

  • No generic one resume for all kind of approach
  • Minimal Design

  • 2 fonts Max

Be mindful that once you get past the ATS tools, your resume will be viewed by a human to see if you’re worthy of an interview call! If you clear this stage, then there is a good chance that you might get the job you dreamed!

So, should you stick to your old resume?

You have your old resume, you tend to update it from time to time, but it has the same old look. It’s not well formatted and not structured properly for the modern era, then you should give it a new look. A new look doesn’t have to be cluttered or crappy, heavy with graphics, designs or images!
